The
sugar house was originally built by father and son,
Willis and Evert Fuller in the 1970's.
David Kerulianian Sr. and Jr. worked on improvements in
the 1990's along with Dan and Bill Fickett.
In 2004 Jim Bishop wanted
to see an old sugar house be in use once again. He
convinced two energetic young men to help him. With
available old taps, a makeshift concrete block for a
fire box, a leaky pan and a lot of guess work, Mountain
Sugar House was reborn. The maple sugaring bug bit and
Joshua and Michael Paton were hooked. That first year 15
gallons of smoky flavored maple syrup was the result of
a learning curve. A real fire box was purchased for the
second year and visiting local operations and seminars
at Bascom's produced a better tasting second year
product.
Investment of new lines from a core group of optimists
along with a lot of hard work has seen steady growth of
the operation. Now in its fifth year, the sugar bush has
witnessed student tours from local schools, individuals
working for home school experience and new business
opportunities. |
